A can of worms

I am the proud momma of about 100 eisenia foetida worms!!! Weird, huh?

Reading the You Grow Girl book has been great inspiration for my gardening, so this week I got ready for the vermicompost project. A Rubbermaid-type box, drill, newspaper, worm 'dealer' and water. Finding the worms was fairly easy, specially for a girl living in an arid non-garden-friendly city. I just looked up fishing forums and searched for live bait. Bingo!

Turns out a nursery a couple of miles away from my apt sells worms for live bait (Vivero San Jacinto, Alfonso Reyes y Lomas del Valle, San Pedro Garza García). So I went yesterday to learn about vermiculture and order my new friends. Weird thing: they don't sell the worms by weight, rather by number. It must be pretty boring to count one, two, three... one hundred worms, buts that's the way they do it. YGG recommends starting with half a pound of worms and I have about one tenth of a pound, but that will do for now, since I also got cocoons in the worm mix.

Now I just have to feed them kitchen scraps, keep them in a cool location and they will work for me!
